5 ways to experience maple this fall

If you’re dreading the winter months of being stuck indoors, fall is your last chance to get out and savour the last moments of sunshine and warm weather. This is the time of year when the forests explode into brilliant displays of fall colours, and any excuse to get outside is welcome.

This fall you can combine your outing with a maple experience, for the ultimate Canadian daytrip that will keep you warm through the long winter months. Now more than ever we are thankful to the small farmers who are working hard to keep us fed and most especially to the farmers who are keeping us well stocked in maple syrup.

This fall, say thanks to a farmer by picking up some Ontario maple syrup. Need some inspiration for how to incorporate maple into your world? Here are five ways you can experience fall from a maple-y perspective.

Take a fall drive (with a sweet ending)

Fall drives are the best way to spend a warm autumn afternoon, and in Ontario the scenery is a spectacular feast for the eyes. Take a road trip and gaze in wonder as sugar maple forests explode in shades of brilliant yellow, fiery reds and rusty oranges. Plan your tour to include a stop at an Ontario sugarbush and pick up some maple syrup to celebrate the maple trees that make our falls so awesome.

Dine on pancakes and maple syrup

Maple syrup isn’t just for spring – you can dine on a stack of steaming pancakes drenched in Ontario maple syrup any day of the year. Visit an Ontario eatery that offers pancakes on their menu and then ask for Ontario maple syrup to pour over it. You can also make pancakes to enjoy in the privacy of your own home, but again, make sure you are using Ontario maple syrup to top it off!

Make your own maple-inspired comfort foods

Fall is the time of year when we long for comfort foods, the homestyle dishes that satisfy our hunger while comforting us in a cozy food cocoon. Adding a dash of maple to your comfort foods can turn an ordinary dish into something extraordinarily Canadian. Try one of these recipes for maple-inspired goodness or come up with your own perfect maple dish. Some good ones include maple baked beans, maple glazed ham, and even turkey with a maple twist! Pick up your syrup from a local sugarbush and help support the farmers in your area.

Hike through a maple bush

It’s a fact that the brilliance of a forest in fall owes its beauty to maple trees, whose leaves are among the brightest and most dramatically coloured. These are the leaves that range in colour from bright yellow to deep oranges to deep crimson reds.  Take a hike through a hardwood forest and bask in the beauty of the season. Contact a local sugarbush that has trails open to the public and stroll through one of Mother Nature’s most beautiful displays. At the end of your hike pick up a bottle of maple syrup to say thanks to the farmer and the trees.
