There are signs of at least 3 different maple sugaring operations over the last two centuries beginning with a stone fire place where cast iron kettles would have been used to boil down the sap. The first sugarhouse from the 1880-1940’s was replaced in 1974 when the operation was re-started and the first saplines were experimented with. Today there are 1000 taps and 4 generations of the Barkley Family have been an active part of the maple tradition. The current operation centered in a 160 year old log sugarhouse uses the best available modern equipment and practices while respecting the long, time honoured tradition of syrup making. The forest provides not only syrup and other forest products…it protects a wide range of other forest values. Pileated wood-peckers, barred owls, several hawk species and even a small moose herd are amongst the species that call this forest home! In 2025 Barkleyvale Farms maple syrup received top honours and was named the best in show for the province. Produced with pride in Dundas County.
