Maple Cranberry Sauce

Every special holiday calls for the sweet/tart flavours of a homemade cranberry sauce. Using maple syrup in place of sugar gives this sauce a unique and Canadian twist that guests will love.

Ingredients

1 bag fresh or frozen cranberries, rinsed and picked over
1/3 cup maple syrup, or more to taste
1/3 cup water
Optional: juice and zest of one fresh orange (about 1/4 cup juice)

Directions

  1. Combine your ingredients in a saucepan. Cranberries, maple syrup, orange zest, orange juice (if using) and water.
  2. Simmer. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until it reaches a simmer.
  3. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for about 8-10 minutes, or until all of the cranberries have popped and the sauce has thickened and reached your desired consistency. (The sauce will also thicken considerably more as it cools.)
  4. Serve warm or chilled.
