Every special holiday calls for the sweet/tart flavours of a homemade cranberry sauce. Using maple syrup in place of sugar gives this sauce a unique and Canadian twist that guests will love.
Ingredients
1 bag fresh or frozen cranberries, rinsed and picked over
1/3 cup maple syrup, or more to taste
1/3 cup water
Optional: juice and zest of one fresh orange (about 1/4 cup juice)
Directions
- Combine your ingredients in a saucepan. Cranberries, maple syrup, orange zest, orange juice (if using) and water.
- Simmer. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until it reaches a simmer.
- Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for about 8-10 minutes, or until all of the cranberries have popped and the sauce has thickened and reached your desired consistency. (The sauce will also thicken considerably more as it cools.)
- Serve warm or chilled.
